Making it Work: The Perfect World
In a perfect world, all of your dreams would be sitting within arms-reach, side by side, waiting for you to make the most of the moment and seize everything you’ve imagined for yourself.
As you’ve likely already noticed, we don’t live in a perfect world, and sometimes, those dreams and goals can seem really out of reach. This is especially true when you have multiple goals, and those goals may not seem to work together very well. Balancing the trials of maintaining your home, working full-time to support your family, and spending time with your loved ones creates a complicated to-do list. Factor in going back to school, and the daily struggle can seem downright impossible.
If you are feeling overwhelmed by the idea of balancing work, studying, and your home life, then you may need to rethink your approach to finding a healthy balance.
Here are four tips to help you find balance in everything you do:
- Stop trying to multi-task. It isn’t possible to do more than one thing at a time because it takes you longer to complete both tasks, and neither comes out perfect.
- Prioritize, delegate, and delete. Determine what comes first and what can wait. These priorities may change weekly or even daily, so review during your weekly planning session. What tasks can be shared by someone else? What should you stop doing?
- Plan your days ahead of time. Find a planner where you can write down everything you have to do, even little things like remembering to check in on a friend or to make a doctor’s appointment. Once you have everything down in one place it becomes easier to prioritize.
- Don’t be busy; be balanced. Busy is a mindset. When you let go of the idea of being busy, you may find that you don’t feel nearly so overwhelmed by your to-do list. Be open to ideas, stand firmly by your priorities, and write everything down. Then, let yourself have breaks when necessary and have a bit of fun now and again.
You get out of life what you put into it. If you want to reach your dreams, then you need to strategize and put as much into every day that you can. Though there is no way to add more hours to your day, getting organized and learning how to balance your different responsibilities may help you accomplish more than you ever thought you could in a day.
Finding a balance in your career, your home life, and your school work requires a lifestyle change. By making a few changes to the way you approach your day, you may find that you can do everything you’ve set your mind to. Make your next move with Georgia College’s WebMBA.
