MBA Applications 101: What To Expect

If you’re thinking about applying to get your MBA, first of all, congratulations! This is a huge step in your life and career, and you should be very excited. But, you might also be feeling confused and lost when it comes to actually filling out applications. There’s so much information out there and so much to do that it might be hard to take that first step in filling out applications.
Here’s what you can expect with your MBA applications.

Essay

One of the most important parts of the MBA application, the essay is your time to shine! Typically this involves some sort of prompts that you will answer in essay form. Examples of questions include, “what was your biggest failure?” and “how would you describe your past business experience?”. While most applicants find this the most stressful part of the process, it doesn’t have to be. Take a deep breath before starting and know you go this.
When writing your answers, make sure to include your personality, background, and let your intelligence shine through. Of course, it’s also vital to triple check for any errors.

Interview

Though this may not be a designated part of every MBA application, some schools do use interviews to help work through all their candidates. Brush up on your interview skills by reading this blog from our experts

Resume

Just like with any job application, your resume is an important part of applying for an MBA program! Be sure you dedicate some time to refreshing and updating your resume to include your most recent educational and professional experience details. It’s also a great idea to include any work you’ve done for your community and any relevant awards you’ve received.

Testing Scores

Most MBA programs will want to see scores from the GMAT or the GRE from their applicants. Research which tests the school you’re applying for requires and then make sure you include those results in your application.

Transcripts and Letters of Recommendation

While not every program asks for these, some will. Be prepared for your application to require transcripts of classes and grades from your undergraduate program. Similarly, some MBA programs require letters of recommendation. Be thinking about past supervisors, colleagues, or professors that you have a strong relationship with that you could ask to provide this reference.

6 Tips for Acing Your MBA Application

Are you ready to take the next step in advancing your professional career? A WebMBA degree from Georgia College can open up plenty of new doors for you in the workplace, but the first step is getting in the door—and that means acing your application.

If you don’t know the first thing about business school applications, we’ve got you covered. Study our 6 tips for acing your WebMBA application and immediately improve your chances of being accepted to our nationally ranked program.

1. Clearly State Your Goals

Be very up front about your ambitions and make sure you reflect those goals consistently throughout all of your application materials. If you don’t know what you want, consider waiting another year to figure that out before you begin the MBA application process.

2. Retake the GMAT if Necessary

A competitive GMAT score is fundamental to your chances of being accepted to the Georgia College WebMBA program. The median GMAT score for our currently admitted students is 530. That is not to say that an individual scoring lower will not be admitted. Nonetheless, assess the benefits of retaking the GMAT and make a judgment based on your personal situation.

3. Create a Stellar Resume

If you haven’t updated the format of your resume in five years, now is the time. Get rid of that outdated layout and give your CV a sleek and modern look. Before you send it in with your application, have another set of eyes glance it over. There are many different companies that provide resume-critiquing services, but sometimes a family member or friend is the best critic. Check out our other awesome resume tips here (link to that blog post).

4. Spend Time Drafting a Quality Essay

Don’t rush through writing your essay and send in something you spent 2 hours on in your free time between work and dinner. If possible, set aside a full day on the weekend to work on your essay. Furthermore, make sure that your essay clearly communicates what your goals are and how you expect a WebMBA from Georgia College to advance your professional career.

5. Be Yourself

In your resume and letter of intent, the most important rule is to always be yourself. Obviously, this means avoiding half-truths and flat-out lies, but it also means allowing your personality to shine through your application materials. Write the essay in your own voice so that the admissions crew gets a feel for who you are as a person.

6. Triple Check for Errors

There’s no reason why your application should be riddled with grammatical errors and misspelled words. Even one or two mistakes may give the admissions people the impression that you didn’t spend an adequate amount of time reviewing your application materials. Enlist a friend to look over your application and make sure it’s error-free before you send it in.
